Christopher Nkunku latest: Chelsea plans in tatters as report claims star has had his head turned by another top suitor

Christopher Nkunku, Marcel Halstenberg, RB Leipzig, November 2022

Chelsea face a test from Real Madrid from Christopher Nkunku, as the RB Leipzig attacker is reportedly willing to wait for the Spanish side.

Nkunku has been a highly sought after star for a lot of the last year. Indeed, a host of big sides have been linked with a transfer for the Frenchman.

It is little wonder why so many big names – Chelsea in particular – are after him.

The fact that Nkunku can play in pretty much every attacking and midfield position makes him a very attractive asset. The fact that he thrives in each of them helps matters, too.

The versatile talent has been in mesmerising form for Leipzig over the past few seasons. Over his first two campaigns with the club, he contributed to 33 goals in the league alone.

Since then, he has become even more of a threat. Last season, the Frenchman was the fourth-highest goalscorer in the Bundesliga, with 20 goals.

What was all the more impressive was that he provided 15 assists alongside those goals.

This season, he has continued in a similar vein. To this point, the 11 goals that he has scored in 13 games make him the top scorer in the Bundesliga.

Chelsea face test for Nkunku

Chelsea have looked the most likely to prise Nkunku away from Leipzig of late. Indeed, reports have claimed that his contract at Stamford Bridge has already been agreed.

It would seem that all there is left to do is agree a fee for the transfer.

However, things might not be that simple. Indeed, Nkunku may now be ready to turn his back on a move to Chelsea, in favour of Real Madrid.

That is according to a report from a Spanish news outlet. It claims that Nkunku is ‘willing to wait’ for Real Madrid, rather than move to Stamford Bridge.

That will be a massive blow for the Blues, if true, given they were expecting to take one of Europe’s hottest talents onboard.

Real Madrid offer major competition

A move to Real would be massive for Nkunku. With Karim Benzema now 35, the striker’s top-level career could be slowly winding down.

As such, Nkunku could take up the mantle of being Real’s new talisman.

While Chelsea will still be keen on making Nkunku their player, if he has his heart set on Real, there will be little they can do.

The English side will have to hope reports of the Leipzig star waiting out his time at the club for a move to the Spanish giants are not true.
