Klopp told of ‘worrying team weakness’ that could wreck Liverpool title bid

Jurgen Klopp Liverpool manager

Liverpool may have started the season in encouraging fashion, but there is still one key area of their side that could halt their title challenge, according to one observer.

That’s the view of former Liverpool striker John Aldridge, after he witnessed Liverpool concede a glut of goals against AC Milan, Brentford and Man City in recent weeks.

Indeed, the goals have been flowing for Liverpool this season. And Mohamed Salah has cemented his status as one of the world’s best players in the opening two months of the campaign. However, Jurgen Klopp‘s team has also been leaking goals at a worrying rate.

And while that makes for great entertainment, Aldridge fears Klopp must seek a fix.

As such, Aldridge has told the Sunday World that the right side of the Liverpool defence is the issue. Marshalled by Trent Alexander-Arnold and James Milner in his absence, Aldridge feels that area is being targeted by opponents.

“Klopp will be spending this international break pondering how to solve the one big issue in his team,” suggests Aldridge.

“The opposition has been targeting the right side of Liverpool’s defence and they have been getting too much joy from that tactic.

“AC Milan scored a couple of goals attacking that side of the Liverpool back four and the same happened with Brentford and then Manchester City last weekend.

Manchester United and Liverpool will reportedly go head-to-head for A.C. Milan midfielder Franck Kessie, with more news on Lorenzo Insigne and Karim Adeyemi.

“James Milner filled in for Trent against Manchester City in the last round of matches and did a decent job, but I wonder whether Klopp needs to look at tweaking his tactics to offer a little more protection on that side.

“This is not a criticism of Trent as he is a fantastic footballer, but maybe Klopp needs to look at the balance in his team to get the defensive side a little more stable.”

Liverpool to come up short in title race

Aldridge fears Liverpool may not get over the finishing line in a highly competitive Premier League title race. Indeed, Manchester City, Chelsea and Manchester United all also all eyeing a push for glory after heavy summer spending.

“I think Liverpool might come up short in the title race unless they find a way to steady the ship at the back, as they look vulnerable defensively,” he added.

“At the start of the season, a lot of experts were predicting the title race would be between Manchester City and Chelsea, but Liverpool have already banished that notion.

“Klopp has a side capable of lifting the Premier League trophy once again, but they need to sort out their defensive problems to reach that goal.”
