Premier League clubs bought and sold a lot of players in 2024 – but which team has spent the most and who has made a profit?

The January transfer window was surprisingly quiet and English top-flight clubs spent just €121.32million, which is the lowest spend in a non-Covid season since January 2012.

But normal business was resumed in the summer transfer window and the 20 clubs spent a combined total of €2.33billion on new players.

We’ve ranked the 20 current Premier League clubs by their transfer net spend in 2024. Note: The list also stipulates deals on an initial fee basis, not those with add-ons taken into account.

20. Manchester City – €108.8m profit

Most expensive signing of 2024: Savinho (€25m)
Biggest sale of 2024: Julian Alvarez (€75m)

City spent just €43.5million in 2024, signing Claudio Echeverri from River Plate in the January window before buying Savinho from Troyes in the summer.

They made a lot of money through sales and Julian Alvarez joined Atletico Madrid in a deal worth an initial €75million, making him the most expensive sale in City’s history.

Pep Guardiola’s side also sold Joao Cancelo for €25million, Taylor Harwood-Bellis for €23million, Sergio Gomez for €9million and Tommy Doyle for €5million.

19. Wolves – €38.1m profit

Most expensive signing of 2024: Giorgi Mamardashvili (€30m)
Biggest sale of 2024: Sepp van den Berg (€23.6m)

Arne Slot took over at Liverpool in the summer but had a relatively quiet first transfer window, signing just two first-team players.

They bought Giorgi Mamardashvili from Valencia before sending him back on loan to the La Liga side and then signed Federico Chiesa from Juventus in a €12million deal.

“We’re happy with the ones we signed because, as I’ve said many times before, it’s difficult to make the team even stronger because we already have a very strong team,” Slot said. “So if we find them, we’re very happy with that.”

The Reds financed those two transfers by selling Sepp Van den Berg and Fabio Carvalho to Brentford for a combined €47million.

The Gunners spent €31.9million to turn David Raya’s loan move into a permanent deal after the goalkeeper won the Premier League Golden Glove last season.

They also Riccardo Calafiori from Bologna in a €45million deal and Mikel Merino from Real Sociedad for €32million, while Raheem Sterling and Neto both joined the club on season-long loan deals.

Emile Smith Rowe, Eddie Nketiah and Aaron Ramsdale all left in search of regular first-team football and Arsenal made €82.9million from those sales.

Pedro Neto, Joao Felix, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, Filip Jorgensen, Mike Penders, Aaron Anselmino, Renato Veiga, Caleb Wiley and Marc Guiu all joined Chelsea on permanent deals.

But the Blues recouped a lot of money and academy graduates Ian Maatsen, Lewis Hall and Conor Gallagher were sold for a combined €119.5million.

Leicester City won the Championship title in 2023/24 and they are the first of three newly-promoted sides in the top seven.

They sold Kieran Dewsbury-Hall to Chelsea for €35.4million, which allowed them to comply with the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules.

Despite their financial worries, the Foxes were still able to spend €86.8million and they bought Oliver Skipp, Bilal El Khannouss, Issahaku Fatawu, Caleb Okoli, Jordan Ayew and Michael Golding.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding Erik ten Hag’s future at Old Trafford, United still backed the manager in the transfer market.

United also spent an initial €62million on Leny Yoro, an initial €50million on Manuel Ugarte and €42.5million on Joshua Zirkzee.

They tried to balance the books by selling Scott McTominay to Napoli for €30.5million and Mason Greenwood to Marseille for €26million.
